The teachers’ intervention is part of our effort to make the Making Changemakers programme a self – sustaining one in the schools we collaborate with. We believe that by supporting and nurturing appropriate skills and attitudes in teachers we can eventually impact successive generations in society. Through our intervention with teachers we train teachers nominated by schools, to independently conduct a life skills and active citizenship programmes with students of the school.
Through the Teacher Training (TT) programmes, we have been able to embed the active citizenship curricula in schools by handing over to teachers and educators in educational institutions where earlier we were working directly with adolescents. This has been done in Delhi through a programme called The World is My Classroom and in other parts of the country through Fellowship support to educators.
To deepen our work with educators, we are in the process of piloting the set up of a Teacher Resource Centre (TRC) in partnership with Bluebells School in Delhi. The Teacher Resource Centre has been set up to promote active citizenship within the school as well as to reach out to 2-3 schools located within its geographical proximity. The centre has been envisioned as a living –learning space, which would provide a conducive environment to encourage and enable educators and practitioners to engage with citizenship issues through training inputs on issues and skills, resource material, fellowships, access to web resources, and opportunities for personal and professional development
Our experience in teacher training over the last several years, also made us aware of the need to create a platform for likeminded teachers with a shared vision and commitment towards active citizenship, with the core values of peace and non violence, equality, justice, secularism and democracy. In order to encourage teacher collaboration and networking, we set up an Educators’ Collective.
